Josh’s Dry Rub for Burgers

Introduction

Grilling burgers in the backyard is a very American past time that has us longing for summer as winter turns into spring. The taste of that freshly charged beef patty keeps us doing it again and again. Maybe having a much smaller clean up job than if we did it inside plays into that too.

There are not many dishes that excites the kids when they ask “what’s for dinner” than giving them the answer of “burgers.” They not only look forward to the burgers, they also look forward to the sides that come with the burgers such as French Fries, maybe a bowl of baked beans, a pasta salad, corn on the cob etc. etc.

Everybody will dress their burger slightly different. Some like ketchup, some like mustard, some like both, and some like mayo or mayo and ketchup, some like barbecue sauce or something chipotle.

As far as the cheese is concerned, some like good ole American Cheese, others like myself like pepper-jack cheese, others like cheddar, swiss, or provolone. The great news about burgers cooked with this burger spice is that any of the cheeses mentioned above will work. So, dress your burger as you like.

There are literally as many burger spice and dry rub recipes as there are people on earth. Some keep it very simple with a couple of spices and others use almost a dozen spices and anyone who puts thought into it can create their own burger spice that makes the burger taste great.

Some make their burger spice mild while others make it spicy, it’s really up to you how you like it. I love anything spicy, but most of my family does not, so this burger spice is mild, but still packed with flavor.

How to Best Spice a Burger

When sprinkling a burger spice onto the burger patties, it’s helps to moisten them a little bit with oil. I prefer avocado oil since it has a very mild flavor and won’t change the flavor of the burger. You can brush the oil onto the burger lightly and then add your spice. Press the spice into the burger so that when you turn it over to spice the other side, the burger spice won’t fall off. Also when you go to grill the burger, the spice won’t fall off while grilling and thereby causing the burger to have too little flavor.

Ingredients

2 tbsp garlic powder

1 tbsp onion powder

1/2 tbsp paprika

2 1/2 tsp kosher salt (more salt to taste as desired)

1 tsp black pepper

Instructions

Combine all the ingredients together in a bowl and mix well. Add to a spice jar. See post above ingredients on how to most effectively spice a burger. It takes a little more thought than just sprinkling the spice onto a frozen Costco patty.

Once spiced, grill your burger as you normally would following the instructions on your particular grill. If you decide to cook the burgers on a pan, I recommend using a light amount of oil and using a stainless steel pan. If you’re worried about the burgers sticking, don’t worry. When burgers are naturally done cooking on one side, they will automatically unstick.

Dress your burger as you desire!

Enjoy!
